Symposium at Alaska State Museum

The Alaska State Museum in Juneau hosted a symposium titled “World War II Remembered” on October 6th. The gathering featured reminiscences of veterans and civilians who experienced the Second World War in Alaska. TEC Committee Members Roger and Karleen Grummett were invited to cover the Japanese internment and the Empty Chair Project with emphasis on its inspiration and purpose.

Honored veterans Dick Garrison, Jack Gucker, Dean Williams, and former Juneau mayor and Alaska’s Director of International Trade with Japan, Bill Overstreet, spoke about their service in Alaska during the war. Local Historian and TEC Committee Member Marie Darlin lead a panel discussing “On the Home Front in Juneau,” and Harold Jacobs from Tlingit and Haida’s Central Council discussed the role of Alaska Natives during the war. Steve Henrikson, curator of the museum, supports our efforts to add historical knowledge about the internment and its effects on Juneau and also on the broader Alaskan community.
